Screening for Dyslexia.

Research shows that the earlier children with potential reading difficulties can be identified, the easier it is to overcome reading problems. The suggestion now is that children as young as 6/7 years old  should be identified in time for greater reading support.

The Dyslexia Screening Test was designed to pick out children who are “at risk” of reading failure so that they can be given extra support at school. Early screening and support can lead to marked benefits in ease of learning to read, thereby avoiding the emotional stress often caused by reading difficulties. Each screening test takes approximately 45 minutes to conduct and can only be done with the approval and permission of the parents.

The test involves a practice and then a main test, the purpose of the practice test is to make sure the child fully understands the task he or she is being asked to do. The three criteria difficulties of dyslexic children are for reading, writing and spelling. Difficulties in reading include both slow speed of reading, and difficulty reading unfamiliar words. Difficulties in spelling are almost always more severe than those for reading, and difficulties in writing are caused both by slow speed and poor quality of handwriting. However, reading, writing and spelling are learned skills, and fortunately it is possible via extensive teaching and support to alleviate the worst difficulties in these areas.

Dyslecsia Cymru/Wales Dyslexia conducts screening tests for children of junior and secondary age and for adults. The screening test is provides information that can be used to identify the relevant support that can help. Junior children who speak Welsh as the first language at home and who are taught through the medium of Welsh at school can take welsh language version of the DST - junior test and a new specific welsh language screening test for 4-7 year olds is being developed.
